The DTPC's Annual Meeting and Banquet will be held Saturday, January 24, 2009 at the Antelope Valley Inn "Apollo Room" 44055 North Sierra Highway, Lancaster, California 93553 (phone: 661-874-4075). The afternoon Annual Meeting will feature reviews of the Committee's ongoing programs, achievements and plans for 2009, and guest speakers from the Bureau of Land Management and the Calif. Department of Fish and Game will give updates on important activities. The Banquet speaker will be Taylor Edwards and the topic is "Defining the Desert Tortoise with DNA: Applications of biotechnology to tortoise conservation".

Title: “Defining the Desert Tortoise with DNA: Applications of                                biotechnology to tortoise conservation”

Conservation biologist Taylor Edwards is an Assistant Staff Scientist at the University of Arizona where he oversees public testing for National Geographic’s Genographic Project, an innovative project where people can trace their ancestry back 60,000 years using DNA.  Taylor’s background is a combination of wildlife ecology and molecular biology and he blends the two to answer pertinent questions about the conservation of species.  Taylor’s research has taken him to China, Brazil, and Cameroon and he has led expeditions for National Geographic to Costa Rica, Panama, and the Galápagos Islands.  He is currently the president of the Tucson Herpetological Society.  Taylor continues to investigate tortoise DNA at his lab using the latest innovations in biotechnology.
